Back in the ’80s, Chaykin pretty much did for the Shadow what Frank Miller did for the Dark Knight — revitalized a dark avenger by dragging him down to a modern, gritty street-level adventure just dripping with blood and noir. Throw in a dynamic milieu reminiscent of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, only cast in the DayGlo days of Miami Vice, and you have a pretty good idea what made Chaykin’s version of the Shadow such a crackling good yarn that begs to be (re)discovered.
Garth Ennis has been tapped as writer for a revival of The Shadow for Dynamite. This could be interesting…
Incidentially, Dynamite are also putting back into print Howard Chaykin’s 80’s take on the Shadow, Blood & Judgment. It’s worth looking at, believe me.
